FNL and sex have something else in common, I currently
don't get to enjoy either.
Another reason this list sucks is due to the lack of dap given to Friday Night Lights. It should be a top 15 show, easily. For me, Friday Night Lights and the OC will forever be intertwined because, they're both a lot like sex at different points in a relationship with someone. The OC is like the night you lost your virginity. The absolute start to it is sublime (at least for the guy). You think to yourself, wow this is going to be amazing. That initial pleasure lasts for a while, but then things start to devolve. It's arrhythmic, there's no chemistry, there might be some awkward thrashing, and you generally just don't know what you're doing. But you have to finish, so you do your best and stumble towards the climax. Afterward, when you actually sit down and think back on it, it really wasn't all that good. But in spite of that, you're always going to remember it fondly. That's the OC - an unbelievable start, gong show in the middle that was painful at times, wild thrashing in fight scenes, and a stumble to the finish that was a result of bad chemistry, a lack of rhythm to the plot and a cast that just wasn't that good and didn't know what they were doing. Despite all of that, I will always think of it fondly. If the OC is like losing your virginity, Friday Night Lights is like the sex thereafter. It's exponentially better and you like it because it's actually good. It's constantly evolving and improving. You develop a chemistry, gain experience, the highs are more intense, there's less blood.... That first part is still sublime, but now the drop off isn't as severe anymore. In fact it's pretty amazing throughout. But then you start to get a little bored. It might be a result of complacency, it might be because it's always more or less the same even though it's consistently good, but whatever the reason, you feel the need to switch things up and experiment a bit. Maybe you try sex in the shower, only to learn that it sucks because you can't feel anything and there's no room to maneuver. Maybe you try to have sex in the most uncomfortable of places (no not the back of a Volkswagen), only to learn that one person's pleasure is apparently the other's teeth-clenching pain. Whatever you try, you crash and burn, so you go back to what works, your favorite positions. You play to old favorites every now and then with things like the counter-clockwise swirl. You learn that you have to just slightly vary things to keep things fresh when the relationship is still relatively young. Finally, once you've actually built up a true chemistry and have a true appreciation for the basics, you're finally ready to start trying shit from "What's your Fantasy."
So how is Friday Night Lights like this part of the relationship? Well it's the evolution of the OC. It's more or less a soap, but guys and girls can equally enjoy the show. The casting is incredible and the characters actually evolve. Coach Taylor and his wife Tami play an even more realistic couple than Sandy and Kirsten. The women are just as hot, except Minka Kelly and the chick that plays Julie Taylor can actually act. The show doesn't take place in fantasy world. There's football. It's basically better in every way except one, music. The first season was unreal. It was a lot like the OC in that you got the feeling the writers didn't think the show had legs, so they just said fuck it, and loaded everything into the first season. When it came back for the second season, maybe it was arrogance, maybe they were bored, whatever it was, they got away from what made it so good and took on two terrible plot lines (the Landry murder and Riggins football suspension).
Unlike the OC though, they got back to basics and turned the show around so that the rest of season two was great. The show seemed to have learned its lesson by season three. They kept things fresh by adding new characters, went back to an old-stand by (the Julie-Matt relationship), and played to the crowd by getting Lila and Riggins together. Eventually, when they were confident in what they were doing and had developed to the point where it was feasible, they pulled the real surprise and had Coach Taylor leave Dillon High, which brings us to where the show is now. Admittedly, I have yet to see any of season 4, but Mike and the critics seem to love it and most importantly, we now have an answer to the question of "where Wallace at?" .... playing running back for East Dillon High. The show is the pinnacle of its genre. Calling it a guilty pleasure is a disservice, because it's just plain good. It's not sex, but it's close. No thanks to NBC and its ridiculously stupid marketing of the show, FNL is still kicking it, but now it's airing on DirecTV first. Season 4 is re-airing on NBC this summer, check it.
